This day in MCW history – Dec. 6, 1951
Dec. 06, 2013 College News - On Dec. 6, 1951, Kurtis Froedtert, owner of the Froedtert Malt and Grain Company, died. He left an estimated $9-11 million to create a new Lutheran hospital that would support medical education and research. His estate was managed by the Lutheran Brotherhood, which was concerned about a possible relationship between a Lutheran hospital and Catholic medical school. The issue wasn’t resolved until the medical school was independent from Marquette University. In the meantime, the Froedtert estate was invested to create the Froedtert Mayfair Mall, the Milwaukee-area’s first shopping center.
