Celebrating 120 Years: 1893-2013
In 2013, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) marks the 120th anniversary of the institution’s founding. It is also the 100th anniversary of MCW’s long and formative years as the Marquette University School of Medicine.
MCW began as the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons, founded on May 20, 1893. On January 14, 1913, the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Milwaukee Medical College merged to become the Marquette University School of Medicine.
In 1967, Marquette University, due to financial constraints, terminated its sponsorship of the medical school. Since then, the school has continued as a private, freestanding institution. The name was changed in 1970 to the Medical College of Wisconsin.
From these roots, MCW has grown into a nationally recognized education, research and clinical powerhouse. MCW has more than 15,000 living alumni.
Faculty / Staff
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) has more than 5,500 faculty and staff (approx. 5,050 full-time equivalents). Faculty: Approximately 1,600 full-time and part-time. Staff: Approximately 3,445 full-time / 230 part-time / 240 project and limited-term. More than 4,580 faculty and staff work on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus and more than 930 work at 29 other health care facilities in eastern Wisconsin. More than 1,500 physicians from the community serve as volunteer faculty. MCW is the 9th largest private employer in the metro area.

EDUCATION MISSION
Degrees offered
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) offers the MD, PhD, MS, MPH and MA degrees. PhD degrees are awarded in basic and translational research; biochemistry; biophysics; biostatistics; cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy; microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics; pharmacology and toxicology; physiology; public and community health; and functional imaging (joint PhD program with Marquette University).
Master’s degrees are offered in: bioethics (MA), clinical and translational science (MS), and public health (MPH). Joint degree programs are offered in: bioinformatics (MS) and healthcare technologies management (MS) with Marquette University, and medical informatics (MS) with the Milwaukee School of Engineering. A dual degree program with Mount Mary College offers the MPH degree. In addition, Graduate Certificate programs are offered in Clinical Bioethics, Public Health and Research Ethics.
Residency training is offered in 83 specialties and subspecialties accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
In 2007, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC) granted reaccreditation to MCW for the longest term possible (10 years). The HLC is the accrediting body for all institutions of higher education in MCW’s geographic region. (HLC - www.ncahlc.org)
In 2011, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) awarded full, eight-year accreditation to MCW, the maximum period of accreditation. The LCME is the accrediting body of all U.S. medical schools.
Education and Training
There are more than 1,260 students enrolled in degree-granting educational programs at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). This includes 810 medical students, and more than 450 graduate students.
In addition, MCW faculty supervise approximately 650 physicians in residency training and 250 physicians in fellowship training through the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. Approximately 200 scientists are engaged in postdoctoral research fellowship training through the Office of Postdoctoral Education.
MCW works with national and international medical specialty societies and community hospitals to accredit approximately 200 continuing medical education activities annually for physicians and other health professionals.
Community Medical Education Program
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is developing a community medical education program to meet Wisconsin’s critical need for more physicians in the coming decades. Wisconsin faces a significant shortage of physicians, primarily in primary care in rural and urban underserved areas, according to extensive studies by the Wisconsin Hospital Association, the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health.
MCW’s first two community medical education campuses will be based in the Green Bay and Central Wisconsin regions. The program will feature an immersive education model, in which medical students receive their medical education and training in these Wisconsin communities, with the goal of students remaining in the communities to practice as physicians. The immersive model is a strong predictor of success in retaining physicians, according to data that show that 70% of students who complete both medical school and residency training in Wisconsin stay here to practice.
The development phase of the program is underway with initial funding from the Research and Education Program of MCW’s Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin endowment. The goal is to admit the first group of up to 15 medical students at each campus as early as July 2015.
Collaboration is a centerpiece of the community medical education program, as MCW is engaging physician practices, county medical societies, academic and health system leaders, local government, and business and civic leaders in the Green Bay and Central Wisconsin regions to assist in planning the program. Collaboration is cost-effective, as start-up expenses are greatly reduced by sharing existing facilities and resources of the regional partners in lieu of new construction.

RESEARCH MISSION
The Medical College (MCW) of Wisconsin is a major national research center, in fact, the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and 2nd largest in Wisconsin.
In FY 2011-12, faculty received more than $166 million in external support for research, teaching, training and related purposes, of which more than $152 million was for research. This total includes highly competitive research and training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
In the federal government’s FY 2012, MCW received approximately $95.5 million in NIH funding and ranked 42nd among the nation’s 136 medical schools receiving NIH research funding. This is the highest rank MCW has received and places MCW in the top third of medical schools receiving NIH funding.
MCW’s research enterprise is focused on strategic, prioritized areas of research involving interdisciplinary collaboration among scientists and physicians with the goal of rapidly translating discoveries into advances for patient care. In FY 2011-12, Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) faculty and students reported 30 new discoveries and inventions to MCW’s Office of Technology Development. The portfolio consists of approximately 150 technologies covered by more than 250 pending and issued U.S. and foreign patients. To bring these new technologies and related products to market, MCW has research and development affiliations with more than 30 campus institutions, major universities, research institutions and health care organizations, as well as government and venture capital groups in Wisconsin and elsewhere. MCW has more than 50 technology license agreements with pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies.

PATIENT CARE MISSION
Approximately 1,350 Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) physicians and more than 500 nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care practitioners provide adult patient care as the Medical College Physicians and pediatric patient care through Children’s Specialty Group, a joint venture with Children’s Hospital and Health System. The Medical College of Wisconsin physician practice includes doctors in every specialty and subspecialty of medicine.
Each year, MCW providers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and psychologists care for more than 425,000 patients, representing more than 1.6 million patient visits.
MCW providers practice at three major affiliates - Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and the Zablocki VA Medical Center - and many other hospitals and clinics in the Milwaukee area
The Campus
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is one of six organizations working in collaboration on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus. Most physicians who staff the clinics and hospitals on campus are full-time faculty physicians of MCW. Other campus organizations (and number of hospital beds) are: Froedtert Hospital (500), Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (296), Blood Research Institute of BloodCenter of Wisconsin, Curative Care Network and the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division (218). MCW and its Medical Center affiliates employ approximately 13,500 people on campus.
The campus’ six organizations had a total economic impact of $2.9 billion (direct and indirect impact) on the four-county metro Milwaukee area, according to a 2009 study.
Major Affiliates
Froedtert Hospital is the primary adult hospital affiliate of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and is staffed by MCW physicians providing care in all medical specialties and subspecialties. Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin are at the forefront of new technology and care in many areas, including cancer, heart and vascular diseases, brain injury and disorders, spinal cord injury, transplant, communication disorders, digestive diseases, diabetes, orthopedics, urology and women’s health. Froedtert has the only adult Level 1 Trauma Center in eastern Wisconsin. The Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center offers the full range of treatment options for every type of cancer in an optimistic healing environment where cancer specialists work together as a team to care for patients.

Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is the principal pediatric hospital affiliate of the Medical College of Wisconsin. It has been named one of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Children’s Hospital is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons. The hospital has been redesignated a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, an honor that recognizes nursing excellence. Children’s Hospital is known nationally and internationally for many of its specialty programs including cardiology and cardiovascular surgery, cancer and blood disorders, aerodigestive programs and newborn and fetal care. Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) physicians are on staff at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, a major hospital affiliate of MCW since 1946. The VA Medical Center provides 168 acute care hospital beds. Annually, it admits more than 7,000 patients and records more than 700,000 outpatient visits. It is one of the busiest and most comprehensive centers operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Approximately $11.7 million in research (funded primarily by the VA and the NIH) is conducted by MCW faculty members at the Zablocki VA. See information at http://www.milwaukee.va.gov/.
BloodCenter of Wisconsin is a pioneering leader in science and medicine, contributing to the discovery, diagnosis, treatment and cures for patients in all of its service areas. BloodCenter provides diagnostic laboratory services to physicians nationwide, and transfusion and hematology-related medical services. BloodCenter of Wisconsin is one of the only blood centers in the country to operate both a tissue bank and organ procurement services. BloodCenter’s Blood Research Institute, whose investigators collaborate closely with Medical College of Wisconsin researchers, is world-renowned for the investigation of blood-related diseases and conditions such as sickle cell disease and hemophilia. For more than 60 years, BloodCenter researchers have made discoveries affecting patients with heart disease, stroke, cancer, immune system disorders and blood diseases.

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) invests significantly in expanding its community mission to build strategic community-academic partnerships that have the greatest impact on Wisconsin’s most critical health needs. MCW’s community engagement mission is complemented by the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) endowment, dedicated to improving the health of the people of Wisconsin through three components:

Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program (HWPP) addresses leading health risks and priorities of the state health plan to prevent causes of death and disability among specific populations. The program functions through community-MCW academic partnerships to leverage the combined expertise toward community health improvement. The program includes the Violence Prevention Initiative, which is implementing violence prevention strategies in communities.

As of November 2012, the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin program has awarded funding to more than 295 projects.

Libraries
Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Libraries comprise three facilities: the main research library located in the Health Research Center; and two clinical libraries, one in Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and one in Froedtert Hospital. The library provides more than 9,000 online journals, 3,500 e-books and 90 databases in addition to a print collection of over 250,000 volumes. The library administers MCW’s Learning Management System, which delivers online courses and content to over 9,000 users; provides help desk and curriculum vitae support for the Faculty Collaboration Database; and offers a FAST service to assist investigators in identifying funding. The Library is a leader in providing evidence-based-medicine resources and instruction for the MCW community. The library is open to the public and serves a number of health consumers, including patients and their families. MCW Libraries is a designated Resource Library by the National Library of Medicine.

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) received more than 6,100 new gifts and pledges totaling more than $18.2 million in FY 2011-12.
MCW was ranked 156th among 833 U.S. colleges and universities for the size of MCW’s endowment, $470.5 million, in FY 2011-12.
