Dr. Lawton Issues Statement on Increase of Self-Referrals to Urologist-Owned IMRT Facilities

A New England Journal of Medicine “Special Article” identifies a 19.2 percent increase from 2005 to 2010 in the use of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for prostate cancer patients by urologists who self-refer to their own in-office IMRT centers. Dr. Colleen Lawton (Radiation Oncology), Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Society for Radiation Oncology, issued a statement on behalf of the society saying, “No provider should allow their financial interest to influence treatment decisions.”

Drs. Sengputa and Banerjee Receive $1.8 Million NIH Grant to Study Chronic Pelvic Pain

Sept. 30 - Jyoti Sengputa, PhD, and Banani Banerjee, PhD, (both Medicine – Gastroenterology and Hepatology) will serve as the primary investigators of a four-year, $1.8 million National Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases grant to study the genetic and physical causes of chronic pelvic pain. Dr. Vetter Named to Hold David S. Haskell, MD, Endowed Chair in Orthopaedic Education

Sept. 30 - MCW named Dr. Carole Street Vetter as the inaugural David S. Haskell, MD, Endowed Professor in Orthopaedic Education. Dr. Haskell is a 1967 alumnus and served on MCW’s Board of Trustees. Becker's Orthopedic Review

Study Planned to Determine Feasibility of MCW School of Pharmacy

Sept. 30 - MCW announced it will explore the creation of a School of Pharmacy to address the pharmacist shortage in the state, especially in Wisconsin’s smaller communities and medically-underserved urban areas.
