Glenn Allen Bolton, Jr. named Senior Vice President of Finance and Administration

I am pleased to announce that Glenn Allen Bolton, Jr., currently Senior Associate Dean for Administration and Finance at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine (UAB), has accepted our offer to succeed Douglas R. Campbell as the Medical College of Wisconsin’s new Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration, effective Sept. 1, 2011. His appointment is pending MCW Board of Trustees approval on June 24, 2011.

Mr. Bolton emerged as the top candidate after a highly competitive national search. He is a native of Nashville, Tennessee, but has resided in Birmingham, Alabama and Dallas, Texas for the past 24 years, where he has served in a number of leadership capacities in two prestigious academic medical centers. (University of Alabama Birmingham and University of Texas Southwestern) Prior to assuming his current role at UAB, Mr. Bolton served as Associate Dean for Administration and Finance at UAB and Executive Administrator for the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. He has also served as Director of the Greater Dallas Injury Prevention Center of Parkland Health and Hospital System, as a Manager at Price Waterhouse Coopers, and as a Public Health Educator and Statistical Analyst in the Health Promotion Section of the Tennessee Department of Health and Environment.

Mr. Bolton earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee School of Education, a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Graduate School of Management.

Throughout his career, he has consistently held faculty appointments, and has published 15 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He also has been active in extramurally funded grants, serving as Project Director or Co-Principal Investigator of Grants from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control, and various national foundations.

Mr. Bolton served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Research Administration. He has been active in a number of national professional societies, including the Association of Academic Health Centers, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Association of American Medical College’s Group on Business Affairs and the Group on Institutional Planning, and the Society of Research Administrators. Mr. Bolton currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Montgomery Baptist Health System in Montgomery, Alabama. He also has served on many UAB committees, as well as on national and international committees of the World Health Organization, the Association of American Cancer Institutes, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, and the Association of Academic Health Centers.

Mr. Bolton has an extensive portfolio of experiences, including oversight of over $500 million of cumulative annual expense budgets; recruitment and retention of academic department chairs; strategic planning; facilities management; construction of research, medical education, and office facilities; LCME self-study and accreditation visits; compliance; and numerous operational and financial aspects of managing a broad portfolio of activities in a top rated medical school.

Mr. Bolton is active in the community, having played significant roles in teen wellness, behavioral risk factor surveillance, child safety seat legislation, the American Cancer Society, Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America, and Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Bolton, or teams on which he served, have won numerous awards from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the National Association of Public Hospitals, and the American Hospital Association.

Mr. Bolton prefers to be called Allen rather than Glenn. Allen and his wife, Lisa, have been married for almost 26 years and have two children, Kelsey (22) and Jeremy (20), both students at Auburn University.

I am grateful to the members of the Search Committee, including Drs. Alexandra Lerch-Gaggl, Ravi Misra, Sally Twining, Earnestine Willis, and Jon Pryor; Diane Gromowski, Marion Livingstone, Pat Radoszewski, and Trustees Tom Spero and Mary Ellen Stanek. I am especially grateful to Committee Chair, Dr. David Warltier, and Committee Co-Chair, MCW Trustee P. Michael Mahoney for representing us so ably during the search. I would like to extend an additional thank you to Peck and Associates for their fine work in facilitating this search.

Daniel Wickeham, Vice President of Compliance, will continue his service as Interim Chief Operating Officer through Mr. Bolton’s arrival. I am grateful to Dan for his superb leadership during this transition period.
