Highlights of unique care for adults

At the Froedtert & the Medical College Clinical Cancer Center, patients are provided a single, specialized team of cancer experts tailored and coordinated for the individual.

Adult care provided at Froedtert Hospital and other Froedtert & the Medical College locations 

• Only adult Level I Trauma Center in eastern Wisconsin.  Recognized for superior outcomes in trauma cases.
• Orthopaedic specialists provide state-of-the-art treatment for complex and simple disorders of the entire upper extremity, using advanced arthroscopy, microsurgical and innovative surgical techniques to restore painless function to all disorders of the upper extremity.  They are the only group in Wisconsin training other physicians to be specialists in upper extremity disorders.
• The Department of Otolaryngology offers the largest subspecialty practice in ear-nose-throat care in eastern Wisconsin.  Nationally and regionally recognized programs with fellowship-trained surgeons include: surgical intervention for sleep disorders, head and neck surgical cancer, facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, neuro-otology and cochlear implantation, throat and professional voice and nose and sinus disorders.
• Only comprehensive, multidisciplinary physician group in eastern Wisconsin who provide care for tumors of the musculoskeletal system.  Limb-sparing procedures are performed in more than 95% of cases.  Patient outcomes meet or exceed national standards.
• The region’s only comprehensive skin cancer program that combines multidisciplinary care for melanoma as well as non-melanoma skin cancer, with clinical trials that offer new treatments and basic research in skin cancer pathophysiology.
• The ALS Clinic (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – “Lou Gehrig’s disease”) is the only ALS Association Certified Center in Wisconsin.  ALS certification is awarded to distinguished regional institutions recognized as the best in the field for knowledge of and experience with ALS.  Expert treatment controls and delays symptoms for patients with ALS, allowing them to continue relatively active, independent lives.
• First in southeastern Wisconsin to use functional MRI and first in Wisconsin to use magneto-encephalography (MEG) to map the brain prior to surgery for epilepsy and the removal of brain tumors.  Both are non-invasive procedures that allow precise preoperative planning and contribute to better outcomes.

Pediatric care at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and other Children's locations

Children's Hospital earned top 10 ratings in five specialty areas:  Emergency Medicine No. 2, Neonatology No. 5, Pulmonary Medicine No. 7, Heart Care No. 9 and Cancer Care No. 10, from Parents magazine in 2009.

• Because child abuse is one of the leading causes of injury death, pediatric physicians have developed educational programs and community outreach projects to decrease child abuse and neglect.
• The Genetics Center is one of a number of centers around the country that provide IV enzyme replacement therapy for Gaucher disease, Fabry disease, Hurler-Scheie and other lysosomal storage diseases.
• Pediatric Sports Medicine started a concussion clinic dedicated solely to children and teens. The clinic utilizes a computerized neurocognitive test to plan appropriate returns to normal activity, school and sports, minimizing the risk of additional head injury.
• Pediatric neurologists are some of the few in the country to use pharmacogenomic testing, which analyzes a patient’s genetic makeup, to select appropriate anti-seizure medications for pediatric patients with epilepsy.
• Pediatric radiologists and orthopaedic surgeons are one of only two groups in the U.S. to use a brand new tool, the EOS system, to assess and monitor children with scoliosis and leg length discrepancies.  The EOS system combines traditional X-rays and advanced imaging techniques to dramatically reduce the amount of radiation required to image the spine- up to 10 times less than a conventional X-ray and up to 89 times less than an advanced imaging technique of the spine- in addition to providing 3D images of the spine when needed. Charges for EOS imaging are the same as a conventional X-ray of the spine while providing better information and reduced X-ray exposure.
• Only pediatric gastroenterologists in Wisconsin providing evaluation using combined pH and impedance monitoring for acid reflux.
• One of the few adult congenital heart disease programs in the country to treat the increasing number of people born with heart conditions who are living into adulthood.  With advances in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart disease, 85 percent of children born with a heart defect can expect to live into adulthood.
• The Program for Fetal Concerns incorporates expertise from at least seven different specialties and was created to care for unborn and newborn babies with abnormalities and educate and assist their families.
• A core team of physicians and health professionals lead the largest tracheostomy/home ventilator program in Wisconsin.  Continuity of care is important for these medically complex children. Children are assigned a core team of health professionals who work with the child and family both in the clinic and whenever they are hospitalized, including coordination of care services and case management services.
