Medical School

The STAR Center offers a well-equipped, state-of-the-art clinical simulation environment, including:

12 clinical examination rooms. Each room is equipped for a typical patient encounter:

• A patient examination bed
• A sink, furniture and phones typical of a clinical setting
• Exam room medical equipment & supplies (e.g. otoscope, ophthalmoscope, sphygmomanometer, etc.)
• 2 digital cameras and microphones - to view the simulated patient encounters in real time and to record for debriefing
• PA (overhead) announcement capability from a central monitoring area

3 Simulation rooms/Procedure labs. These rooms can double as clinical examination rooms.  Each room is equipped with:

• A patient examination bed
• A sink, furniture and phones typical of a clinic setting
• 2 digital cameras and microphones - to view the training session in real time and to record for debriefing
• PA (overhead) announcement capability from a central monitoring area
• A divider between 2 of these rooms can be removed to combine 2 rooms into a larger lab space.

2 Simulator labs with adjacent control room. These rooms are used with our full-body, high-fidelity physiological mannequins.  One room is equipped as an OR. One room is a flexible space that can be equipped as an ER, ICU, patient ward room, etc.  Each room has:

• 2 digital cameras and microphones - to view the training sessions in real time and to record  for debriefing
• PA (overhead) announcement capability from control room
• A sink and phone
• Lines for O2 and pressurized air; Suction lines
• Monitoring via one-way control room window and computer
• Ancillary equipment and supplies needed for high-fidelity medical simulations (e.g. full array of adult and pediatric airway management devices, syringes, catheters, trocars, IV poles, IV fluids and lines, simulated blood bags, surgical drapes, gloves, gowns, etc.)

The OR Simulation lab is equipped with:

• An adjustable surgical table
• An anesthesia machine and ventilator
• A full-function patient physiological monitor
• A supply & medical equipment-filled OR anesthesia cart
• Mayo table & surgical side table
• A large stainless OR supply cabinet
• Defibrillator

The ICU/ER/Patient Wardroom Simulation lab is equipped with:

• Gurney or Hospital Bed
• Ventilator
• Patient physiological monitor
• Spine board, cervical collar
• Defibrillator

Central Monitoring Area. This area is equipped with:

• 12 computer stations
• Monitors with audio headsets to observe clinical exam rooms, procedure labs and simulations labs in real time or from previous encounters recorded digitally

2 Conference Rooms (1 large and 1 small). These areas are equipped with:

• Large plasma screens with VCR, DVD, CD-ROM presentation capabilities
• The plasma screens can also view live or recorded feed from exam, procedure or simulator rooms
• The large conference room can be divided into two separate, smaller rooms

Training room/lounge. This area is equipped with:

• Kitchenette
• Shower
• A screen and AV equipment for VCR, DVD or CD-ROM presentations
