Rachel Greenup – Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons – Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident in Surgery
Residents receive an award certificate honoring their selection as an SLS Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident, inclusion in the listing of Outstanding Laparoendoscopic residents to appear in the Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and free membership with the Society for the year of nomination. The selected winner’s name must be submitted by the deadline provided by the SLS to become eligible. Initiated in 1996.
The resident that is selected has demonstrated great promise in the field of operative laparoscopy, endoscopy and/or minimally invasive surgery. A ballot is distributed to all surgical faculty at all institutions affiliated with the general surgery training program. The ballot includes the names of the PGY 5 and PGY 4 residents. Ballots are returned and the resident with the greatest number is selected as the winner.

Emily Albright – Robert E. Condon Golden Scalpel Award – Outstanding Technical Ability
The Robert E. Condon Golden Scalpel Award was initiated in 1996 and is awarded to a Chief Resident for outstanding technical ability. A ballot is distributed to all surgical faculty at all institutions affiliated with the general surgery training program. Ballots are returned to the residency office and the resident with the greatest number is selected as the winner. This award was implemented by an MCW graduating resident, Richard McNutt MD. Dr. McNutt continues to purchase the golden scalpels and engraves Dr. Condon’s initials “R.E.C.” at no cost to the department.

Tim Ridolfi – Condon/Donegan Research Award
The below two awards were combined into one award in 2009.
The Robert E. Condon Research Award was initiated in 1997 and recognizes outstanding conduct in research. The Residents present their research during selected Grand Rounds and Residents’ presentations are critiqued by a selected group of faculty.
The William L. Donegan Oncology Research Award (2002) recognizes outstanding conduct in oncologic research (can be PhD or MD). Residents/PhDs are asked to present their research during selected Grand Rounds. Residents/PhD’s presentations are critiqued by a selected group of faculty.

David Gourlay - Professionalism Award "as Exemplified by a Faculty Member"
The Professionalism Award (2005) is given to a faculty member who best exemplifies outstanding professionalism. Dr. Mark Adams implemented this award in 2005 to recognize faculty professionalism.
All residents currently in the General Surgery Resident training program are eligible to vote. An e-mail is distributed to all residents by the Residency Program Coordinator explaining the purpose of the award and asking for a ballot to be returned. All ballots are tallied with the award going to the individual with the greatest number of ballots.

Bren Heaton – John Just Award in Thoracic Surgery
The John Just Award in Thoracic Surgery was implemented in 2008 by Dr. John Just to recognize those residents who are technically adept in thoracic surgery. A ballot of selected residents for the current academic year is voted by the surgical faculty and a $500 certificate is awarded.

Kelly Collins – Iron Dog Award/Junior Resident of the Year
This award was initiated in 1990 and represents the outstanding junior resident in Surgery. The graduating residents choose, by consensus, a PGY1 or PGY2 resident that has excelled in the general surgery training program.

John Weigelt and David Schmitt – Aprahamian Faculty Teaching Award
This award recognizes two outstanding faculty teachers, one internal to FMLH/MCWAH and one from an affiliated institution. The graduating residents select one full-time faculty and one clinical faculty by a consensus. Initiated in 1986. [Photo of Dr. David Schmitt not available.]

Colleen Trevino – Physician Extender Award
The Physician Extender Award was implemented in 2005 by the graduating residents to recognize those who have passion for their jobs while working with the residents. Graduating residents choose one individual who has gone above and beyond working with and educating residents. The winner is selected by consensus from the graduating residents.

Karen Brasel – Golden Cane Award/Faculty Teacher of the Year
The Golden Cane Award originated in 1987, was instituted by Mark B. Adams MD, and is in recognition of the outstanding faculty teacher. The nominees are voted on by the Junior and Senior medical students – tallied by evaluations from May through April from the JMS Exit Survey, and the SMS Rotation Evaluation Forms. A wooden cane with gold handle, along with a small gold plate engraved with the winner’s name, year, and “Golden Cane Award” is presented to the winner.

Rachel Greenup – Barney Becker Award – Outstanding General Surgical Resident
The Barney Becker Award was initiated in 1986 and is in recognition of the outstanding general surgical resident. The nominees are voted on by the Junior and Senior medical students – tallied by evaluations from May through April from the JMS Exit Survey, and the SMS Rotation Evaluation Forms. There is a monetary award of $500.

ABSITE High Achiever Awards
Junior Exam: Tom Wade, 87% correct, 97th percentile
Senior Exam: Emily Albright and Mark Kiely, 77% correct, 77th percentile
The ABSITE High Achiever Award was agreed upon and implemented by the APDS Committee ($100 gift card to each resident). This award recognizes the highest percentage score by a junior resident and senior resident based on their most recent junior level and senior level ABSITE results, respectively. The Program Director/Associate Program Directors/Resident Program Coordinator determine the award based on scores.
