Acute Care Surgery Service

In July 2009, the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Surgery is introducing an Acute Care Surgery Service which is unique in the level of independence allotted for the Chief Resident who is considered a colleague and partner by the surgical faculty. The Acute Care Surgery Service is a major part of the fifth year clinical experience and is being introduced in an effort to increase the autonomy and independent thinking of the chief, experiences which have largely been lost in many training programs due to work hour restrictions, increased regulation regarding patient safety, and the continued emphasis on sub-specialization for many academic faculty. Drs. Kathleen Christians and Karen Brasel are leading the department’s effort to create this exciting change.
