Dr. Thomas T. Sato named CEO of Children’s Specialty Group

Jan. 16, 2014 College News - Thomas T. Sato, MD, Professor, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been named Chief Executive Officer of Children’s Specialty Group (CSG) and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs – Pediatric Practice, effective February 17, 2014. He also serves as Co-Director of the Pediatric Surgery Burn Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW). Dr. Sato replaces Interim CSG CEO Charles T. Durkee, MD, who had assumed the role in September 2013 upon the departure of Marc Gorelick, MD, MSCE, for an expanded senior executive role within CHW.
Dr. Sato served as an appointed member to the CSG Board from 2006-2012. He has held a number of committee positions within CHW since 1998, including the Credentials, Critical Care, Service Standards, and Nutritional Support Committees. He also was a member of the Children’s Information Services Physician Focus Group, Bariatric Surgery Board, and iStrategy Planning Group, and served as Chair of the Pediatric Residency and Fellowship Task Force of CHW from January 2012–March 2013. He currently is Co-Chair of the Medical Economics and Outcomes Committee at CHW and is a member of the CHW Residency and Fellowship Committee, the Physician Task Force Conflict of Interest Group, iStrategy Advisory Group/Clinical Decision Support Group, iStrategy Core Provider Group, and Pediatric GI Service Line Workgroup.
Dr. Sato also has held many educational/administrative positions at MCW, including serving for a decade on the Resident Education Committee in the Department of Surgery, as Associate Program Director for Pediatric Surgery, Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Training Program, and Associate Medical Director for the Postgraduate Physician Assistant Program. Additionally, Dr. Sato currently serves on the Surgery Curriculum Education Committee and as Program Director for Pediatric Surgery in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Sato was named Teacher of the Year in the Department of Surgery at MCW in 2001, and received the Standing Ovation Award from the MCW Class of 2003 (in 2002) and the Edward Lennon Endowed Clinical Teaching Award from MCW in 2003. In 2011, he received the CSG Excellence in Education Award. Since 2004, Dr. Sato has been listed in Best Doctors in America (Pediatric Surgery), and since 2011 as a Top Doctor in US News & World Report.
Dr. Sato received his MD from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1988. From 1988-1991 and from 1993-1995, Dr. Sato served as a Resident in General Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He was an NIH Postdoctoral Basic Science Research Fellow in Trauma and Burns in the Department of Surgery, Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington, from 1991-1993. From 1995-1997, Dr. Sato was a Resident in Pediatric Surgery at the Children’s National Medical Center.
Dr. Sato joined the faculty of the Medical College of Wisconsin in August 1997. From 1997-2003, he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery, and from 2003-2008 as Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Sato was promoted to Professor of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery, in July 2008. He currently is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery.
Children’s Specialty Group is the pediatric group practice of MCW and CHW, representing more than 500 physicians and providers in approximately 34 specialties who practice at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and outreach clinics throughout Wisconsin. Children’s Specialty Group is comprised of approximately one-third of the clinical faculty of the Medical College of Wisconsin and is the largest pediatric group practice in Wisconsin.
