John E. Baker, PhD, Awarded New NIH Grant
John E. Baker, PhD, tenured Professor of Surgery (Cardiothoracic) has been awarded an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the extent to which total body irradiation, from a radiation accident or radiological terrorism, affects the cardiovascular system. Dr. Baker and his colleagues will define the mechanisms underlying total body irradiation-induced injury to the coronary vasculature and ventricular function, and determine the ability of medical counter-measures to mitigate radiation-induced injury to the cardiovascular system. The project is being conducted in collaboration with John E. Moulder, PhD in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Dr. Baker’s initial findings have been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Radiation Biology.
