John Weigelt Awarded 2011 Faculty Vitality Award
Chief of Trauma and Critical Care Surgery, John Weigelt, MD, DVM, MMA, was recently awarded a 2011 Faculty Vitality Award. The Faculty Vitality Award program was designed to provide support to faculty members at the Medical College of Wisconsin for career development and scholarly endeavors to be undertaken on a concentrated but less intensive basis than a traditional sabbatical. The award provides support to develop and enhance a specific theme related to one’s clinical, research, and/or administrative responsibilities. The project must be directly related to one or more of the core missions of MCW including education, research, patient care and community service. All faculty with six or more year’s service to MCW are eligible. Applications are reviewed annually by the Faculty Career Development Committee and the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, with the final decisions made by the Dean.
Dr. Weigelt’s proposal is entitled “Developing Patient Safety Officers (PSO) for Froedtert Memorial Hospital (FH) and Medical College of Wisconsin Physician Group (MCP)”. As medical director of the Joint Clinical Quality Office of Froedtert & the Medical College, he helped to develop a prototype for a Patient Safety and Quality Officer (PSQO) in the Obstetrics and Gynecology service line. This person was mentored in performance improvement techniques and they helped him develop patient safety and quality initiatives within his practice area to improve obstetrical patient safety and quality as measured internally and with the UHC database. Dr. Weigelt’s proposal focuses on applying this model to the entire hospital practice to develop a cohesive collaborative approach to patient safety and medical quality.
At the end of the award, Dr. Weigelt will submit a written report to the Faculty Career Development Committee as well as give a project presentation at a department or campus-wide meeting.
