Division of Vascular Surgery

FELLOWSHIP

Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program Objectives

The Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin consists of a 24-month training period, focusing on the evaluation and treatment of peripheral vascular disease. During the first year, the vascular surgery fellow acquires skills in catheter directed treatment in a collaborative relationship with the Interventional Radiology Fellowship program at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Specific clinical assignments of the fellow during the first year of fellowship include clinical experience in Interventional Radiology, conducting a weekly peripheral vascular case planning conference at the Zablocki VA Medical Center, and developing skills in non-invasive vascular laboratory testing and interpretation. The first year fellow shares on-call responsibilities with the second year fellow to comply with work hour limitations. The first year vascular surgery fellow participates in clinical research under the supervision of the vascular surgery faculty. During the second year, the fellow is primarily responsible for the clinical Vascular Surgery Service at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital and is the primary operating surgeon for major vascular reconstructive procedures. Clinical experiences are also provided in the outpatient clinic and in performing and interpreting non-invasive vascular testing in our ICAVL accredited vascular laboratory. An educational program with weekly conferences and independent study coordinated by the fellow is a part of the Vascular Surgery educational program. The spectrum of vascular disease includes cerebrovascular reconstructions, mesenteric and renal artery reconstructions, repair of thoracoabdominal and infrarenal aortic aneurysms, the management of upper and lower extremity arterial occlusive disease, and venous disorders. Approximately 300-400 major vascular reconstructive procedures are performed each year on the vascular surgery service. Assigned to the Vascular Surgery Service are a third year general surgery resident, two first year surgery residents, and a nurse practitioner. The fellows’ clinical responsibility increases during the program and, prior to completing the fellowship, the graduate will have competence in both open vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. The vascular surgery fellow completes over 200 major vascular reconstructive procedures during the two-year fellowship.

The Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin has a formal educational program in the science of Vascular Surgery. Conferences are held weekly, including case presentations; non-invasive and basic science of vascular surgery which reviews the principles of non-invasive vascular testing, hemodynamics and the science behind such therapy. Case conferences are held in conjunction with the Interventional Radiology Service and members of the Digital Imaging Faculty from the Department of Radiology. Clinical teaching occurs on a daily basis in the operating room, interventional suites, outpatient clinics, and on the surgical units.

Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital offers outstanding facilities for the care of patients with vascular disease. Support from anesthesia, critical care, cardiology, and other medical services are excellent.

The Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin is approved to finish one fellow per year. The faculty is comprised of four full-time board certified vascular surgeons whose practices are limited to peripheral vascular surgery and five full-time board certified Interventional Radiologists. Individuals with both academic and private practice aspirations are considered for this fellowship and are selected through the Vascular Surgery Match Program.
