Breast Cancer Program
Froedtert Hospital and The Medical College of Wisconsin offer a comprehensive, experienced team of physicians including surgeons, radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, genetics counselors, clinical psychologists and physical therapists who treat all forms of breast cancer. This team emphasizes a multidisciplinary, individualized approach to caring for the breast cancer patient. Our breast center has been accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. The Division of Surgical Oncology includes four board-certified surgeons who participate in this multidisciplinary team including Amanda L. Kong, MD MS, Paula M. Termuhlen, MD, Alonzo P. Walker, MD, and Tina W.F. Yen, MD MS. In addition, Dr. Yen, Dr. Kong, and Dr. Termuhlen have pursued additional training at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX in surgical oncology and breast surgical oncology. Our breast surgeons have almost exclusively breast-only practices and thus are dedicated to providing the most up-to-date care for our patients. In conjunction with Dr. Walker, the Director of the Breast Center, Dr. Termuhlen oversees the high-risk screening program.
Froedtert and The Medical College of Wisconsin are involved with several national and local clinical trials that are examining different ways to improve breast cancer treatment involving new surgical approaches, combination therapies, the delivery of radiation, and new drug agents. For example, Dr. Kong has opened a trial trying to determine the optimal management of postoperative pain after a mastectomy. Dr. Yen has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Cancer Institute investigating lymphedema (arm and hand swelling after breast surgery) incidence and risk factors in older breast cancer patients. Dr. Yen also collaborates with Dr. Ann Nattinger, Medical College of Wisconsin internist and director of the Medical College of Wisconsin Center for Patient Care and Outcomes Research. Dr. Nattinger has worked extensively in the field of breast research and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health as well as many other sources for her numerous studies including increasing the use of screening mammography, quality of life factors, treatment effects on cognition, and breast cancer outcomes.
