Residents are given the opportunity to participate in medical missions:
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) has a 25 year commitment to the people and doctors of Bucaramanga, Colombia. Starting in 1985, a request for plastic surgeons to help with burns and such was answered by our MCW plastic surgeons.
The mission has grown to include craniofacial, and then pediatric urology in 2005. Our urologists typically see patients the first day in clinic and then operate for the next week. We also experience some of the local culture.
This trip is a unique combination of learning how medicine is practiced along with the challenges of everyday life in a different culture. Helping teach the local doctors how to refine their skills in regards to pediatric urologic diagnostic and surgical procedures is very rewarding.
