Medical College of Wisconsin History

Led by President and CEO T. Michael Bolger, JD, the Medical College of Wisconsin is advancing quickly in the ranks of U.S. medical research institutions. It has numerous internationally honored clinicians and researchers and last year ranked in the top 35 percent of the 125 American medical schools with National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding. The Medical College of Wisconsin traces its roots to 1893 with the founding of the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons, the first of two Milwaukee medical schools founded in that decade. The schools merged in 1913 to become the Marquette University School of Medicine. In 1967 Marquette University, due to financial constraints, terminated its sponsorship of the medical school. The school then continued as a private, national, freestanding institution. Its name was changed in 1970 to the Medical College of Wisconsin. The Medical College has approximately 12,500 alumni.

The Medical College offers the MD, PhD, MS, MPH and MA degrees. Other degrees offered are: MS in medical informatics (joint degree program with the Milwaukee School of Engineering), MS in health care technologies management (joint degree program with Marquette University) and epidemiology; MPH in occupational medicine, in general preventive medicine and public health, and in health services administration; and an MA in bioethics. Residency training is offered in every medical specialty and subspecialty.

The Medical College of Wisconsin has approximately 4,370 faculty and staff and is the 12th largest private employer in Metropolitan Milwaukee. There are approximately 1,000 full-time faculty and 75 part-time and visiting faculty.

A total of 1,200 students are enrolled in education programs at the Medical College. This includes 796 medical students, 404 graduate students, including physicians enrolled in the Master of Public Health degree programs. In addition, Medical College faculty supervise 715 physicians in graduate medical education (residency training) programs through the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is the largest research institution in Milwaukee and the 2nd largest in Wisconsin. In fiscal year 2002-2003, College faculty received nearly $119 million in external support for research and training. Of this total, $76.6 million represents highly competitive research and training awards from the NIH.

Each year, Medical College physicians care for more than 260,000 patients, representing more than one million visits. Medical College physicians practice at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, Froedtert Hospital and many other hospitals and clinics in the Eastern Wisconsin.
