The study of host defenses that protect against infection by pathogenic microorganisms and of adverse effects as a consequence of immune reactions. Areas of investigation include cellular and molecular mechanisms of immune regulation, tissue transplantation, recombination of immunoglobulin genes, immunogenetics, autoimmunity, innate immunity, and immunoevasions.
