New Tool: HCUP Fast Stats

AHRQ has unveiled HCUP Fast Stats, a new online product from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project that provides easy access to the latest HCUP statistics from 41 States on numbers of hospital discharges by payer group (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, uninsured) for categories of conditions (surgical, mental health, injury, medical). Fast Stats enables State-by-State comparisons and can be used to analyze the effects of Medicaid expansion on hospital utilization levels and payment sources. This tool is still in development, so check back as new queries are added.

New Arrival: 2012 HCUP Data

The EDRC has obtained the 2012 Kids Inpatient Database (KID) and the 2012 National Inpatient Data (NIS). Both the KID and the NIS are part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) which is produced by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Both administrative datasets are widely used to track inpatient diagnoses, procedures, and costs. Because of the large number of sampled inpatient discharges, these datasets are particularly helpful when looking into patients with rare conditions. It is important to note that the sampling design used in the 2012 data is now different from previous years. Contact us if you are interested in knowing more.

Dr. Beyer Finds that Green Space Contributes to Happiness

Kirsten Beyer, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Institute for Health and Equity, is lead author of a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health that found that the more green space a neighborhood has, the happier people feel. Results from the approximately 2,500-person assessment show areas with more green space had a positive impact on the residents' state of mental health, specifically in regard to stress, anxiety and depression. The study is a result of a collaborative effort with the University of Wisconsin's Survey of the Health of Wisconsin (SHOW) project. WTOP in Washington, DC was one of many news outlets that covered the story.
