Thomas A. Brophy, MSW, has dedicated his life to helping others through his work with Milwaukee County, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and his volunteer service with Milwaukee nonprofit groups.

After beginning his career as a social worker investigating claims of child abuse and neglect, Mr. Brophy advanced into several management positions in Milwaukee County and was eventually appointed Director of Health and Human Services. In this role, he oversaw an array of programs for children, the disabled and the elderly with an annual budget in excess of $350 million. In 1994, he was appointed Administrator of John Doyne Hospital and proceeded to facilitate the closing of the County-run facility and the integration of multiple programs and services into Froedtert Hospital. Mr. Brophy retired from Milwaukee County in 1995. After consulting for two years, he joined MCW as Director of Community Relations and helped advance the public and community health mission of the College in Milwaukee. He held this position for 12 years until retiring in 2010.

Mr. Brophy was integral in helping with the formation of the Milwaukee Academy of Science. He serves on the academy’s board and other boards in the community, including Community Advocates and St. Charles Youth and Family Services. He has been honored by the Public Policy Forum, Volunteer Center of Wisconsin and St. Norbert College, and he continues to maintain an active role in policy issues affecting the disadvantaged in the community.
