Research Seeks to Unlock Mysteries of Late-Life Depression

Oct. 11 - With an aging population, including a significant number of baby boomers, late-life major depression (LLD) is a growing public health issue already affecting more than 5 million individuals in the US, according to Joseph S. Goveas, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine and training director of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program. Goveas, who is the co-primary investigator (PI) of the project, and a team of researchers are pioneering a study that is looking to piece together the puzzle of what in the brain causes LLD.

Wisconsin researchers awarded $5.3 million for NIH precision medicine research

August 29 – Three Wisconsin based medical and scientific organizations – Marshfield Clinic Research Institute, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and Medical College of Wisconsin – have collectively been awarded $5,360,832 to help implement in Wisconsin the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) All of Us Research Program that aims to benefit communities across the country.

Local Institute Wins Bid to Host Health & Human Services Small Business Innovation Research and Technology Transfer Conference

Aug. 8 - Milwaukee has been dubbed the “Heartland of BioHealth Innovation.” The Clinical Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin (CTSI), a part of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), was chosen by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services to host the national 2017 Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (HHS SBIR/STTR) conference in 2017.

July 26 - Johnny C. Hong, MD, Mark B. Adams Chair in Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), was featured in an M Magazine article, “Saving Baby Dominic: “How a world-premiere surgery kept a Wisconsin newborn alive,” published online this week.

Community-Based Weight Loss Intervention for African American Breast Cancer Survivors

July 18 – Melinda Stolley, PhD, associate director of Cancer Prevention and Control at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) Cancer Center completed a study, Moving Forward, with 250 African American breast cancer survivors, successfully implementing an intervention to help these women make and maintain positive changes in weight, eating habits, physical activity and social support networks.

Medical College of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy Launches Doctor of Pharmacy Program

July 14 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) School of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program has been granted pre-candidate status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the national agency for accreditation of professional degree programs in pharmacy.

Innovative Study Could Alter Way Clinicians Treat Concussion Patients

July 6 - Whether suffered by an athlete on the field or non-athlete at home, mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs), including concussions, are typically measured by using a checklist of symptoms. But, according to Lindsay Nelson, PhD, clinical neuropsychologist and assistant professor of Neurosurgery and Neurology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), athletes and civilians, and likely, men and women, suffer different types of mTBI, often varying by type of impact and severity level.

Medical College of Wisconsin Researcher Awarded $1.7 Million Grant to Study Imaging of Brain Tumor Cells

July 3 - Peter LaViolette, PhD, MS, assistant professor of radiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) received a five-year, $1,752,975 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute to investigate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of glioblastoma, high-grade brain cancer.

July 3 - Ivor J. Benjamin, MD, FAHA, professor of medicine and director of the Cardiovascular Center at Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been named president elect of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Board of Directors.

Rising Second-Year Medical College of Wisconsin Student Wins Excellence in Medicine Minority Scholars Award

July 3 - Bellony Nzemenoh, a second-year student at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), received the 2017 Excellence in Medicine Minority Scholars Award from the American Medical Association Foundation.

Andrew S. Greene, PhD., Receives Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Scholar Award

June 28 - Andrew S. Greene, PhD, is the recipient of the 2017 Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Scholar Award, which honors the memory of former Milwaukee Alderman Steve Cullen who died suddenly of a heart attack at age 40. Dr. Greene is the interim vice chair of clinical and research affairs and professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Dr. Robert D. and Dr. Patricia E. Kern Professor of Biotechnology and Bioengineering at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW).

MCW Researchers Receive $100,000 Pilot Grant to Investigate Breast Cancer Treatment

June 28 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) received a two-year, $100,000 pilot grant from the MCW Cancer Center and Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse to investigate breast cancer treatment. The WBCS is an organization that supports early stage breast cancer and prostate cancer research at MCW.

Chair of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy at Medical College of Wisconsin Named

June 28 - Jonathan S. Marchant, MA, PhD, will join the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) as chair of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy, effective Sept. 1, 2017. In addition, Dr. Marchant was awarded the Marcus Professorship of Human and Molecular Genetics.

United Hospital System to Expand Affiliation with Froedtert Health (PDF)

April 27 – Kenosha’s United Hospital System, with hospital campuses in Kenosha and Pleasant Prairie, and Froedtert Health have signed a letter of intent to expand their current relationship. The proposed agreement calls for United Hospital System (United) to expand its affiliation with Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network and to adopt Froedtert & MCW care quality protocols and best practices.

MCW Names Kurt Janavitz as Senior Vice President of Healthcare Partnerships and Strategy

April 5 - Kurt L. Janavitz, MBA, has been named senior vice president, healthcare partnerships and strategy for the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), effective April 17, 2017. Janavitz previously served as chief executive officer for Integrated Health Network of Wisconsin (IHN) from January 2015–April 2017.

John R. Kirby, PhD, Joins the Medical College of Wisconsin as Chair of Microbiology and Immunology

Feb. 9 - John R. Kirby, PhD, has joined the Medical College of Wisconsin as chair and the Walter Schroeder Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. From 2014-2016, Dr. Kirby served as professor of microbiology at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He also was founding director of the Iowa Microbiology Microbiome Initiative.
