Contemporary Neurological Challenges in Community Practice: A Practical Approach | January 14, 2017

Event Brochure (PDF)

Moderator/Facilitator: Frederick Freitag, DO

To educate community based clinicians on best approaches to sift and winnow through patient complaints in order to achieve correct diagnoses for timely delivery of care and accuracy in treating patients.

Neurological symptoms are common in community medicine practice. Many complaints presented by patients are vague and may have multiple causes. This increases the likelihood of misdiagnoses, which at times can have grave consequences. The problems of neurological symptoms in primary care leading to an accurate diagnosis or timely referral remains a significant gap in quality care.

The workshop will address approaches specialists would take to assessing the patient, ordering diagnostic testing, determining decision points for referral and presenting evidence-based therapeutic recommendations suitable for the community-setting.

This program is designed to meet the needs of primary care providers including family medicine specialists, nurse practitioners, internists, pediatricians and community-based neurologists.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Present evidence-based as well as expert evidence approaches to addressing the common problems identified.
  • Review the approaches to obtaining the most meaningful diagnostic tests for a given presentation.
  • Provide strategies to aid in optimizing consultations through understanding of choosing the optimal subspecialists for specific cases for optimized treatment or when to choose a general neurologist to aid in situations requiring clarification of diagnosis.
