Derek Parshall, MD
PGY-IV Orthopaedic Surgery Resident
Medical School: University of South Carolina
Hometown: Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
Why I Chose MCW: Having rotated at MCW, I was able to experience first-hand the comradery amongst residents and faculty, the confidence and comfort level of the residents in the operating room, as well as the high volume case load of a busy level 1 trauma center. These were all important to me in my search for a residency program.
What MCW has to offer a Candidate: MCW offers candidates a well-rounded education at a high volume trauma center with all sub-specialties covered within the Milwaukee area. The curriculum includes unique opportunities such as a VA experience as well as elective rotations in the 4th and 5th year to further customize your education to your area of interest. In addition to the clinical aspects, there are an abundance of research opportunities to pursue should you choose to. Ultimately, MCW focuses on training well-rounded orthopaedic surgeons who are highly competitive for fellowship, or are immediately able to enter practice.
What I like about living in Milwaukee: From outdoor activities, restaurants, sporting events, or night life, Milwaukee has a little bit of everything for everyone. During spare time there is never a shortage of things to do.
