Staruschenko Lab is focused on understanding the mechanisms regulating ion channel activity and electrolyte homeostasis in the control of kidney function and blood pressure.
My current research focuses on the role of extracellular proteases and protease-activated receptors (PARs) in diabetic kidney disease. I test the effect of inhibition of PAR activity on the development of diabetic nephropathy, which will allow defining a fundamental clinical question about the role of PAR as a new therapeutic tool to prevent podocyte damage that occurs from diabetes. This research could form a basis for developing new therapeutic strategies that protect the kidney from developing diabetic nephropathy and hypertension.
