Research Interests
Medical education, Clinical anatomy, Gross anatomy and Instruction methodology
Dr. Hoagland joined the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy in 2010. His scholarly activity centers on (1) evaluating content and instructional/learning methodology in a Clinical Human Anatomy course – in particular its relevance to contemporary clinical experience and practice, (2) translating basic anatomical science research findings into clinically meaningful information, and (3) evaluating professionalism in medical students to enhance their self-awareness and improve patient care outcomes.
Dr. Hoagland has extensive teaching experience in: Medical Gross Anatomy, Head and Neck Anatomy for Dental Residents, Teaching in the Biomedical Sciences (AKA, Effective Teaching Methods), Embryology, Teratology & Prenatal Genetics, and Anatomical Basis of Imaging. He has been actively involved in attempting to identify, develop and apply the most suitable methods, media and/or technologies for the effective presentation of various aspects of anatomy especially graphic presentation enabling interactivity and active learning for both the individual learner and for groups of learners, to facilitate the learning and understanding of anatomy by students and health professionals.
Dr. Hoagland has participated on the following committees: Curriculum and Evaluation, Course Directors, Module Directors, Anatomical Donor Memorial Service, and Dean’s Education Innovation Advisory Committee. On a national level, he is actively involved with the American Association of Anatomists on the Educational Affairs Committee, and with the American Association of Clinical Anatomists serving in numerous leadership positions: co-chair of the Career Development Committee, and member of the Meeting Oversight and Program Committee, Anatomical Terminology Committee and Bylaws Committee.
Dr. Hoagland has a passion for teaching and he strives to create a classroom environment where students feel safe to contribute, comfortable to criticize and self-confident enough to ask questions. His hard work and dedication to medical education has been richly rewarded with numerous teaching awards, an award for outstanding ethical leadership, and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
