A Message from the Chair

This newsletter is filled with great news and landmarks – e.g., our faculty continuing to take on new leadership roles, our residency size increasing, and the creation of a new endowed fund gifted from one of very own alumnus.

Successful succession planning and maintaining a culture of excellence and collegiality has become our hallmark. We are wishing a fond farewell and congratulations to two of our esteemed faculty – Drs. Bruce Campbell and Charlie Harkins – as they transition into retirement and embark on the next great chapter of their lives. We welcomed Dr. Jennifer Bruening this past autumn and look forward to welcoming Dr. Karl Doerfer this summer. In addition, we continue to attract the best and brightest residents and fellows; they are the glue that keeps this family close, as we all share in the joy of teaching and mentoring.

On a more macro scale, MCW continues to expand and diversify as a health sciences university while forging new and closer relationships with its existing health system partners – Children’s Wisconsin and Froedtert Health. Also, our health enterprise footprint continues to expand with key partnerships in various parts of our state with ongoing discussions of how best to integrate our clinical services to serve the people of Wisconsin and beyond.

We are all hoping to be soon on the other side of this pandemic so we can once again be together for alumni gatherings – formal and informal. The days of picnics, Brewers baseball games, graduation festivities, and holiday celebrations will come again, hopefully in the very near future. Those days are sorely missed by all of us!
Please enjoy this newest edition of the department newsletter and catch up on all the highlights. I hope to see to you all soon and wishing you continued safety and good health.

With warmest regards,

John Rhee MD
