Biography
Dr. Sanders is a Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at MCW, and a practicing physician in the Columbia St. Mary’s System. Dr. Sanders is recognized internationally as an expert in community medicine, research and education. Most of his clinical experience has been in community health centers serving people without insurance and the working poor. Sanders has served with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) and provided medical relief in Asia, South America and Africa.
Dr. Sanders has also served as the medical director of the Center for International Health, which is based in Milwaukee. He has been involved with research and medical work around the globe and is an expert on international, immigrant and refugee health care. He has been honored with numerous humanitarian and teaching awards for his service to the poor, recently receiving the President's Award for his work in the Republic of Georgia. In 2013-2014, Dr. Sanders took a sabbatical year as a Fulbright Scholar to assist the University of Zambia’s School of Medicine with its efforts to initiate the country’s first family medicine training program.
