Ongoing Study Not Currently Enrolling
AREDS2 10-Year Follow-On Study
Purpose of study:AREDS2 supplements are oral nutritional pills containing Vitamin E, Vitamin C, copper, zinc, lutein, and zeaxanthin that are used by patients with macular degeneration with the goal of preventing or slowing the progression of the disease. The purpose of this follow-on study is to examine the long-term effects of the AREDS2 oral supplements taken by participants in the original AREDS2 study that began in 2006.
Researchers want to investigate the incidences of lung cancer, development of late age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract surgery, and cardiovascular events by inviting participants back for an in-clinic visit 10 years after enrollment in the main AREDS2 study.
What is age-related macular degeneration (or dry AMD)?Age-related macular degeneration (or dry AMD) is a disease that affects central vision. AMD affects the macula, the part of the eye that allows you to see fine detail and focus on "up close" activities. The macula is located in the center of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.
What is involved?
The study involves a single clinic visit that includes vision testing, various types of imaging of the eyes, a review of medical and ocular history, and an eye exam.
