Resident and Senior Medical Student Electives

Resident Electives

Elective rotations in the Pediatric Emergency Department and Trauma Center are available on a monthly basis to residents in pediatrics, emergency medicine, and family practice residency programs. These electives are designed to provide additional exposure to pediatric emergencies and to hone management and technical skills. Scheduled differently than the regular emergency department rotation, these electives permit more time to study and to attend conferences. Residents from training programs outside the Medical College of Wisconsin residencies or from other specialties will be considered for elective training. For information, contact Marlene Melzer-Lange, MD at (414) 266-2647.

Senior Medical Student Electives

A one-month elective is offered to two senior medical students per month. Students register for this rotation through the MCW senior student elective computer program. Non-MCW students will also be considered for this elective which comprises 40 hours per week in shifts from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm or from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Students are expected to attend both types of shifts. The two students develop their own schedule and may not work the same shift. At the end of the month, each present a 20-25 minute PowerPoint presentation and discussion at the senior student Morning Conference under the mentorship of a pediatric emergency department attending physician. This elective provides direct exposure to a myriad of pediatric emergencies as well as the opportunity to work directly with a great group of pediatric emergency medicine faculty members! Highly recommended for students considering pediatrics, emergency medicine, or family practice residencies. For questions related to this elective, contact Marlene Melzer-Lange, MD at (414) 266-2647.
