Graduate Student

Greetings! My name is Sunshine Xiong and I am from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am currently finishing up with my undergraduate at Alverno College with a degree in Human Biology. I was previously involved in the Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) with the Medical College of Wisconsin. Through the experience, I had the opportunity to observe recorded genetic counseling sessions, identify the specific counseling skills being used, and then debrief with a genetic counselor on which strategies were most effective. This experience has not only given me a strong understanding of the genetic counseling field but helped confirm that this blend of hard science and counseling is the best career match for my professional and academic interests.

I am currently working as a certified nursing assistant at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center. This experience has given me the opportunity to implement some of the counseling skills that I learned in my genetic counseling internship. I hope to continue to provide greater emotional support to patients and clients now and in the future. I am excited to be a part of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s first class of Genetic Counseling, 2023
