Glaucoma Filtering Implants: More Evolution Than Revolution
Edward Barnett, MD PhD
Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences
Medical College of Wisconsin
The first glaucoma filtering implant (ExPress) was introduced almost 2 decades ago as an alternative to trabeculectomy. More recently, a second such implant (Xen) was introduced. For both implants, the original surgical approach was altered based on surgeon’s experience. This talk will review these two implants: how they were intended to be used, how they are commonly used, and what advantages/disadvantages they have when compared to traditional glaucoma filtering surgery.
