Gene Therapy and the Eye: Past, Present, and Future

Deborah M. Costakos, MD, MS

In this session you will learn: Advances in science and the sequencing of the human genome have led to the 1st FDA approved gene therapy for Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, specifically targeted to the eye. The eye is unique given its immune-privileged status, giving ophthalmology an advantage for success. Treatments hold promise for our patients but are not without ethical dilemmas which we have dealt with and continue to navigate along the way. This talk will review the history of gene therapy, the specifics of FDA approval and what may be ahead.
