Empty Sella, Empty Promises?

Empty Sella is a common finding on cranial imaging studies, but has also been associated with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). When incidentally found on MRI, this finding often leads the radiologist to advise “Consider IIH in the appropriate clinical setting”, which can result in potentially unnecessary concern and testing. This talk will review the connection between IIH and empty Sella, assess the relative utility of empty Sella as a diagnostic finding (with particular focus on recent studies in the Neuro-ophthalmologic literature), and discuss an approach to patients incidentally found to have empty Sella on cranial imaging.
