Manual Small Incision Extracapsular Cataract Extraction: a Historical Perspective to Aid the Modern Surgeon

Presenter:
John Suson, MD
Assistant Professor

In this session, you will learn: Historically over several decades, cataract surgery developed from large incision manual extracapsular cataract extraction to small incision phacoemulsification. Over that time, many younger surgeons have had little exposure to extracapsular cataract surgery. In recent years, modifications of the technique have allowed much smaller incisions for manual extracapsular cataract surgery. The smaller incisions have allowed for much faster surgery and quicker recovery in patients with dense cataracts. This talk will explore how a return to this modified surgery can have an important place in the modern cataract surgeon’s tool bag.
