Global Cataract Blindness: Challenges, Solutions, and Participation
David Khorram, MD
Director, Global Ophthalmology
University of Virginia
In this session you will learn: Cataract blindness is completely treatable, yet cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness worldwide, with millions of people spending years in blindness due to lack of access to cataract surgery. The highest concentrations are in low-income countries. We will survey the concerns and challenges to providing safe and effective cataract surgery in areas with limited resources, and present successful models, as well as analyze the sorts of changes that need to occur for a durable solution. Participants will be given practical tips on how to become involved in the fight against global blindness.
