Master of Science in Genetic Counseling Program Receives Accreditation Status
The Master of Science in Genetic Counseling (MSGC) program has been granted New Program accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Council (ACGC), effective October 20. The MSGC program achieved accreditation status in just five months, a feat that most programs require eight months or more to accomplish. The program now joins 54 accredited genetic counseling programs nationwide.
Last month, the MSGC program hosted their first virtual open house and had more than 80 attendees. In addition, the program participated in the National Genetic Counseling Virtual Career Fair with more than 800 participants. The fair featured over 50 master’s level genetic counseling training programs from across the continent, with information from various genetics professional groups.
Wisconsin workforce has half of the projected need for genetic counselors. The MCW MSGC program is dedicated to addressing this shortage for the health of our community.
Virtual internship experience for Milwaukee-area students
Due to COVID-19, the MSGC program had to pivot their traditional in-person genetic counseling internship experience through the Graduate School’s PURE program. Two highly motivated students from Marquette University and Alverno College are participating in a virtual internship experience with Jennifer Geurts, MS, CGC, Director for the Genetic Counseling Program, as their advisor. The experience combines mock chart review, case preparation, viewing sessions with standardized patients, case follow-up and reflective writing. Genetic counseling internships are an important opportunity for increasing awareness of the profession and engagement with underrepresented students. Few opportunities like this exist in the state, so the MSGC program innovated a way to keep its commitment to these students.
National Genetic Counselor Awareness Day is Thursday, November 12
Genetic Counselor Awareness Day is dedicated to empowering genetic counselors and helping consumers understand the important and supportive role genetic counselors can play in their healthcare. At MCW we are proud to employ more genetic counselors than any other organization in the state.
