Local Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Run/Walk to Benefit Cardiac Research at the Medical College of Wisconsin
Cullen Run/Walk proceeds help various MCW research programs and scholarship including studies to identify genetic risk factors of heart disease, to learn more about the causes of hypertension and to better understand the correlation between plaque buildup and coronary artery disease. In its 24 years, the event has raised more than $492,000 for cardiovascular research and awareness, and it is expected that it will surpass the half-million-dollar mark this year.
The Cullen Run/Walk is an eight-kilometer run, and a two-mile fun run/walk along the scenic Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa. Sponsored by the Cullen family and the Badgerland Striders, the event features Cullen Family & Friends Chili, refreshments, food, a silent auction, an awards ceremony and live music for the entire family.
For those who wish to participate but want to avoid cold temperatures, an indoor option also is available at the Wisconsin Athletic Club in Wauwatosa.
The event is held in memory of former Milwaukee alderman Steve Cullen who died in 1995 at age 40 of sudden cardiac arrhythmia. His father, at age 41, and two brothers, ages 53 and 51, also died of heart disease. Over the past 24 years, the Cullen Run/Walk has grown in attendance, drawing about 700 participants and volunteers every year and encouraging heart-healthy lifestyles for all participants and their families and friends.
