Medical College of Wisconsin Faculty Members Receive Health Care Heroes Honors

Milwaukee, Dec. 16, 2019 – The Health Care Heroes awards, presented annually by BizTimes Media, honor the accomplishments of people and organizations making a positive impact on health in the area. This year, three faculty members of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) were named Heroes.

Terri deRoon-Cassini, PhD, associate professor of surgery (trauma and critical care), received the award in the Behavioral Health category for her work treating victims of traumatic experiences who are likely to suffer post-traumatic stress disorder. Working alongside surgeons, Dr. deRoon-Cassini provides psychological care to injured trauma patients and is also involved in research identifying neurological, biological and psychosocial markers for PTSD.

Katja Kovacic, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics (gastroenterology), received the award in the Advancements in Health Care category for her work researching, testing and developing a wearable device to alleviate symptoms of bowel disorders in adolescents.

Cheryl Maurana_Academic Profile

Cheryl Maurana, PhD, senior vice president for strategic academic partnerships and founding director of the Kern National Network for Caring and Character in Medicine, received the award in the executive leadership category, which honors a senior-level individual who demonstrates strong skills in leading their organization in quality care, collaboration and financial management.

“I am extremely proud of these MCW faculty members, whose exceptional work advances health for everyone in our community,” said Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine, Provost and Executive Vice President of MCW. “Each uses her unique skills and passion to make a positive difference and to serve as a role model for our learners.”

The 2019 Health Care Heroes will be featured in the BizTimes’ December 16th issue. They were recognized at an awards ceremony Friday, December 13.
