Local Medical Students Raise Money and Collect Food for Feeding America at Hoops for Hunger Event
Milwaukee, February 26, 2020 - The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) hosted its third annual Hoops for Hunger basketball tournament and food drive on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Froedtert & MCW Sports Science Center downtown. The event was held in collaboration with the Milwaukee Bucks, and non-perishable food items and monetary donations were collected from the spectators and players for Feeding America of Eastern Wisconsin.
Eight MCW teams competed in the tournament, including one from each medical school year at MCW-Milwaukee, a combined MCW-Green Bay and MCW-Central Wisconsin team of medical students from these campuses, a combined School of Pharmacy and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences team, a resident team and a combined faculty and alumni team.
“This event was a smashing success, and we would like to thank the Alumni Association, Student Assembly, Milwaukee Bucks and everyone who supports Hoops for Hunger,” said fourth-year medical student at MCW-Milwaukee organizer Bryce Toburen.
The third- and fourth-year medical student, resident and faulty/alumni teams advanced to the second round, with the residents facing the fourth-year medical students in the final. The residents were the champions, bringing home the coveted Hoops for Hunger Cup for the second consecutive year.
“Overall, the true victor was Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, which will be able to provide 1,450 pounds of food to eastern Wisconsinites in need due to the generosity of all who supported this event,” Toburen said. “We look forward to seeing the continued impact this event will have in the future.”
