Prevea, HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center and MCW to launch family medicine residency program in Green Bay
Residency programs are designed to provide licensed physicians advanced training in a particular field of medicine; and, where resident physicians work under the supervision of experienced faculty physicians, providing direct medical care to patients. The residency program sponsored by HSHS St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center and managed by Prevea Health in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) will be for physicians interested in the field of family medicine, also known as primary care.
"In addition to providing physicians advanced training, residency programs help to address physician and primary care shortages across Wisconsin – especially in rural areas," said Dr. Ashok Rai, President and CEO at Prevea Health. "Our residency program will draw more physicians to Green Bay and surrounding rural communities to care for patients not only during, but hopefully, after their residency training. Research shows that many physicians choose to practice medicine in the communities in which they attended residency."
"A healthier Wisconsin requires access to primary care physicians across the state," said Joseph E. Kerschner, MD, Dean of the School of Medicine, Provost and Executive Vice President of the Medical College of Wisconsin. "Innovative solutions to create increased training positions to enhance the number of primary care physicians in Wisconsin require collaborative partnerships to accommodate more students graduating from medical schools. Together with our partners, we are growing and preparing the next generation of health care partners to serve communities throughout Wisconsin."
The new residency program is being made possible, in part, by a $728,192 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) as part of its DHS Graduate Medical Education (GME) Initiative. "We are still in the very early stages of developing the residency program, but hope to officially launch in 2019," said Dr. Rai.
"HSHS St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center is delighted to partner with Prevea and MCW to train future generations of physicians and provide our communities greater access to primary care," said Therese Pandl, President and CEO of Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) – Eastern Wisconsin Division. "Our commitment to medical education is demonstrated by our partnership with MCW-Green Bay and further enhanced by the development of the residency program."
Prevea Health, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay work in partnership with MCW-Green Bay, established in 2015 as Green Bay's first medical school. "We are honored to be a part of MCW-Green Bay to help develop future physicians attending medical school, and now, our residency program will allow us to extend that commitment – and offer newly-graduated physicians a program to further advance their training," said Dr. Rai.
The residency program in Green Bay will be the second residency program operated by Prevea Health. In July 2017, Prevea Health established the Prevea Health Family Medicine Residency Program in Eau Claire, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, MCW and HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital. The Prevea Health Family Medicine Residency Program features two residency clinics: Prevea Health Family Medicine in Eau Claire and the Prevea Augusta Health Center.
