MCW School of Pharmacy partners with Carroll University to enhance 3+3 Pipeline Program
Milwaukee, April 5, 2017 - Carroll University and the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) School of Pharmacy have partnered to develop a dual degree program allowing full-time Carroll University students who successfully complete their pharmacy program prerequisites to gain early assurance direct admission of available seats in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program at MCW.
The dual degree program allows students participating in Carroll's Target Health Science Program to earn both a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree at Carroll University and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the MCW School of Pharmacy in just six years.
The dual degree six-year program is comprised of 3 years of undergraduate curriculum at Carroll University followed by 3 years of study in the PharmD curriculum at MCW. The coursework completed in the first year of study in the PharmD program will transfer back to Carroll University, to complete Carroll Bachelor of Arts or Science degree requirements. This option alleviates some of the financial burden of school tuition for students seeking to obtain both a bachelor’s degree and PharmD degree.
"This partnership enhances a direct pipeline program to recruit students to the Doctor of Pharmacy program," said George E. MacKinnon III, PhD, MS, RPh, founding dean of MCW's School of Pharmacy. "The pipeline program allows the MCW School of Pharmacy to engage with prospective students early in their education, increasing our connection to the pharmacy graduates of the future."
Carroll University students who express an interest in the program will have access to a MCW faculty mentor, career discussions, shadowing opportunities with the MCW School of Pharmacy's clinical partners, and will potentially have access to undergraduate research opportunities at MCW.
"We are excited to partner with the Medical College of Wisconsin on this unique program," said Jane Hopp, PT, MS, PhD dean of the College of Health Sciences at Carroll University.
"Collaborations like this are extremely important as higher education continues to evolve to meet the needs of students and a changing professional environment."
The MCW Pharmacy School is the only 3-year PharmD program in the Midwest that is located at an academic medical center, providing access to world-renowned resources at Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin for students and faculty alike. The aim of the MCW Pharmacy School is not only to educate the pharmacists of the future, but also create new and innovative practice models and inter-professional health care teams that leverage the role of the pharmacist to deliver patient-centered care with improved health outcomes.
