Three Medical College of Wisconsin leaders chosen to attend 2018 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference

Milwaukee, Feb. 13, 2018 – The annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference is one of the most important meeting of the year for hospitals, insurance companies, investors and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. This invitation-only conference provides a venue for hundreds of stakeholder status reports and showcases their visions for the next year and beyond. Although academic medical centers are not traditionally well-represented at the conference, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) participates each year to continue seeking more efficient and effective healthcare delivery methods and medical technologies to improve patient care.

Three MCW representatives were chosen to attend last month's four-day conference in San Francisco: Nathan Ledeboer, PhD, associate professor of pathology; Barclay Ferguson, chief financial officer; and Edward Diehl, PhD, intellectual property marketing manager in the Office of Technology Development.

Dr. Ledeboer led a panel discussion at the conference, providing valuable information about new technologies, payment models and diagnostic modalities. He was also a member of another panel where he discussed the promise of artificial intelligence in medicine. "It is important for the Medical College of Wisconsin to meet with the right clinical experts and investors earlier and more often than ever before, and we also need to identify new technologies that can be truly transformative for our patients," Dr. Ledeboer said.

Focused on health care delivery and new financial models, Ferguson believes it is critical for academic medical centers like MCW to attend the conference. Meeting with healthcare and investor partners is important, he said. "You have to be there in person to find out what people are creating in healthcare; you cannot simply read about it later in the Wall Street Journal or on Twitter. An academic medical center is tasked with bringing great ideas to the public, so we are constantly asking, 'What is everyone else doing, and what are we giving back?'"

Dr. Diehl's participation in the conference allowed him to make new pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry contacts and identify the technology gaps that each is trying to fill. "We need to be more aggressive in finding industry partners and start-up investors in order to deliver our early-stage medical technologies to patients who desperately need them," Dr. Diehl said. "The opportunity to interact with key opinion leaders at this conference is unparalleled."
