My research is based in systems physiology, primarily the neurobiology of stress conditions. Recent research focus is on central neuronal circuitry at the interface of sympatho-sensory responses. Current studies address the role of endocannabinoid signaling in the integration of autonomic and pain responses related to neuropathic injury and its translational potential to human studies. Acute research techniques include electrophysiological recordings from whole autonomic nerves simultaneously with extracellular recordings from single sensory neurons and microinjection manipulation of central neurons. Chronic studies utilize heart rate variability and sensory monitoring supported by tissue analyses including real time RT-PCR, spectrophotometry and enzyme assays. Human studies are in progress to translate preclinical findings to better understand acute and chronic pain conditions after traumatic injury and autonomic regulation in PTSD.
