The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is a major national research center, the largest research institution in Eastern Wisconsin and second largest in Wisconsin.

Funding and Studies

  • $154 million in grant awards for research, teaching, training and related purposes in FY 2013-14*
  • Includes approximately $138 million for research
  • Includes $79.5 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) during the federal government’s FY 2014
  • MCW is ranked 46th among the nation’s 137 medical schools receiving NIH research funding
  • Despite declining rates in federal research funding, MCW’s funding from the U.S. Department of Defense has increased 65% since FY 2011-12
  • More than 2,500 research studies, including clinical trials, conducted in FY 2013-14

*MCW's fiscal year is July 1 through June 30

Discoveries and Technology Transfer

  • More than 40 new discoveries and inventions reported in FY 2013-14
  • Approximately 200 technologies covered by more than 250 pending and issued U.S. and foreign patents
  • More than 50 technology license agreements with pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies
  • Research and development affiliations with 25 campus institutions, major universities, research institutions and healthcare organizations, as well as government and venture capital groups in Wisconsin and elsewhere
  • Throughout MCW’s history, faculty scientists and physicians have generated more than 200 discoveries that have helped to save lives and improve health

MCW research is accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.
