Our Department is home to a competitive training program of 36 residents – attracting top-notch housestaff from medical schools across the nation. And are you afraid of caring for sick kids? Well, our residency graduates aren’t! Our residents train in the Emergency Department at the Children’s Wisconsin (level 1 pediatric trauma center) – which sees over 60,000 patients visits annually. We also offer a state-of-the-art, nationally-recognized Emergency Medical Systems (EMS), Emergency Ultrasonography, and Medical Toxicology fellowship programs – again attracting some of the brightest and most skilled young emergency physicians from around the country. In addition, our Department co-sponsors training opportunities in Critical Care Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine with the Departments of Medicine and Anesthesiology, respectively.

Introducing the Center for Substance Use Research & Intervention (SURI)

The Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to announce the launch of the Center for Substance Use Research & Intervention (SURI).

SURI developed from a small group of faculty, staff and learners in 2019. This small group met monthly to discuss collaboration on projects across campus related to substance use and overdose prevention. In the summer of 2023 and March 2024, the group engaged in strategic and implementation planning to lay the groundwork for a center at MCW. In the summer of 2024, Dr. Ian Martin, Eminent Scholar, professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, and interim associate provost and senior associate dean for faculty affairs, designated funds for the development of a center, and the Center for Substance Use Research & Intervention (SURI) was officially established. Dr. Jennifer Hernandez-Meier, assistant professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, and Dr. Julia Dickson-Gomez, professor, Institute for Health & Humanity, serve as interim co-directors.

SURI has grown to include more than 30 MCW faculty, staff and learners, faculty from Milwaukee universities, and individuals from Vivent Health and Froedtert Community Hospital Division.

SURI has four cores that align with MCW’s pillars: Education & Training, Clinical Care & Treatment, Community Engagement & Advocacy, and Research & Data Science. A search has been launched for core directors.

SURI is guided by the vision of “a community without harm from substance use and a mission to collaborate with communities to promote health in Wisconsin and beyond by advancing research, training, and holistic responses to the harms of substance use.” Through engaging those who work every day to make a difference in reducing harm, nonfatal and fatal overdoses, as well as individuals and families impacted, its members hope to create a center that will benefit the Milwaukee community and beyond.
