This is the most exciting time EVER to choose a career as a neuroscientist
The Neuroscience PhD Training Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin provides the motivated student with superior training in Neuroscience Research while allowing for maximal flexibility in the choice of research area and coursework. The faculty of the Neuroscience program come from 11 basic science and clinical science departments and all lead nationally funded research programs. These faculty serve as research mentors and teachers. The environment of the program is scholarly and challenging but student-centered and flexible. The goal of the Neuroscience PhD Training Program is to provide students with the knowledge, laboratory skills, critical thinking and communications skills that are essential for a successful career in Neuroscience Training.
Students entering the Neuroscience PhD Training Program should have a strong background in the sciences, particularly Biology, Chemistry or Psychology. The first year of the training program includes a core curriculum of Biochemistry, Neuroscience and either Cell Biology or Genetics. The first year students come together once weekly with a faculty member to discuss primary literature in a Journal Club. At the same time, students rotate through the laboratories of Neuroscience faculty members. These rotations are hands-on laboratory experiences that allow the students to explore the variety of research opportunities that are available in the Neurosciences of the Medical College of Wisconsin. After completion of the first year, students select a research mentor and join the graduate program of the mentor's department. During the second year, students complete a mock grant proposal that serves as the qualifying exam and take specialized courses. Strong emphasis is placed upon completion of dissertation research that is on a problem of current importance in Neuroscience.
