Northeastern Wisconsin Residency Program

Medical College of Wisconsin Northeastern Wisconsin (NEW) Residency Program

Welcome!

Building on the Medical College of Wisconsin’s community education focus, the Northeastern Wisconsin (NEW) Psychiatry Residency Program is geared toward instilling the knowledge base and ability needed to care for the mental health needs of rural areas and beyond. Such a focus will not decrease a prospective applicant’s educational opportunities, but rather quite the opposite. Graduates of our program will have the practical experience needed to be psychiatrists able to function, and lend consultation to other disciplines, in geographic areas of most any size.

A Message From Our Director | James M. Billings, MD

I entered medicine as my second career, and I have to say, I absolutely love being a physician and being a psychiatrist! Almost every day I am able to find great joy in seeing patients, overseeing our residency program, and doing what I love most in the work-space, mentoring and encouraging physicians. This part of my journey started when I attended the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee campus, for medical school. I then matched into this residency, the Northeastern Wisconsin (NEW) Psychiatry Residency program, and was part of the second class of residents (our first class graduated in 2021). After graduating residency, I took my first job as an attending psychiatrist, and chose that job because I wanted to work in rural healthcare, and work with resident physicians.

Here at NEW Psych we are building something exciting. To date, eleven of our graduates have chosen to take jobs in this area, testifying to the amazing quality of our rotation sites, and that this is a wonderful location to build an incredible life. All eleven of those graduates are involved in our residency program! All of our founding members of the core faculty (who haven’t moved out of the area) remain with the program because they love working with residents and are passionate about helping this area of Wisconsin become a leader and a haven for those who need exceptional psychiatric care.

I invite you to start exploring the cities of Green Bay, De Pere, Appleton, Neenah, Menasha and Oshkosh. You will find a lot to love, whether that is the natural beauty including state and local parks and recreational areas, amazing restaurants, fantastic schools, and even an NFL team. Home prices in this area are such that you could buy a house during residency, or live in downtown Appleton in a nice apartment on College Avenue, full of restaurants, pubs and much to explore. Traffic is light, parking is easy, and all of this together means that both during and after the work-day, you will have the opportunity to build an amazing life over the next four years. And if you’re like so many of us who found NEW Psych, you just might want to make this your home and join us as we build something incredible.

During your time at NEW Psych, the faculty, your fellow residents and I would love to support you as you continue to lay and build upon the foundation of the physician and psychiatrist you want to become. If you have any questions, please reach out. Really! I would love to provide any assistance and encouragement I can as you consider the next steps of your career.
