Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Neurology Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

Interview Updates

For the 2023-2024 application cycle, all Department of Neurology fellowship programs at MCW will be conducting virtual interviews due to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic.

Welcome from the Program Director, Dr. David Shirilla

Thank you for your interest in the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship program at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Our fellowship is accredited by the ACGME and provides fellowship trainees with firsthand experience in performance/interpretation of a multitude of neurophysiologic testing modalities, spanning the entire spectrum of clinical neurophysiology. Prospective applicants to this program must have completed a Neurology or Child Neurology residency in an ACGME-accredited program and should be board eligible or board certified in Neurology or Child Neurology.

Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

Highlights
  • Flexibility for trainees to design a fellowship tract that best matches training exposure with their desired future style of Clinical Neurophysiology practice.
  • Opportunity to work alongside our cordial Neurology staff, often in a one-on-one environment, who cite mentorship of prospective Clinical Neurophysiology trainees, as their primary academic priority.
  • Access to training exposure in more advanced forms of electrodiagnostic testing, including magnetoencephalography (MEG), Single-Fiber EMG, and autonomics, if interested.

Application

Two of our CNP fellows will be matched through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) hosted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)

An additional EMG/NCS-focused fellowship position will be offered outside of the match. To apply for the non-matched position, please send your application materials to neurofellowships@mcw.edu.

Desired training focus for Clinical Neurophysiology can vary significantly from one fellow to the next. Our program is structured to allow our fellows to prioritize a track that best suits their career goals. The three most popular tracks include EEG-focused training, EMG/NCS-focused training, or a more traditional track, with balanced focus between these two primary disciplines. All fellows, regardless of their primary focus, will spend one month in the adult epilepsy monitoring unit, one month in the pediatric epilepsy monitoring unit, and one month in the EMG/NCV laboratory. Elective experiences in the autonomics lab, sleep medicine, magnetoencephalography (MEG), intraoperative monitoring (IOM), and evoked potentials (EPs) are also offered. Research-focused elective rotations are also available.

Mentorship is a key component of any successful training program and is a major focus for our program. My goal as Fellowship Director, is to provide trainees with the needed neurophysiologic testing exposure and guidance; thereby ensuring they sufficiently develop the desired skills to prepare for their future. This may mean entering directly into practice after fellowship or transitioning to a second year of fellowship in a related field such as Epilepsy or Neuromuscular Medicine.

Training occurs at our three affiliated hospitals in Milwaukee: Froedtert Hospital (tertiary care hospital for adults), Children's Wisconsin (tertiary care hospital for children), and the Clement J Zablocki VA Medical Center (tertiary hospital within the VA system).

Through this program, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a diverse set of faculty members.
