MCW's Department of Anesthesiology was established in 1957, as a division of the Department of Surgery. By 1965, Anesthesiology became an independent department. Since then, the scope of Resident and Fellowship training, research and patient care have continually increased. Approximately 100 Residents and Fellows are involved in training annually. Research conducted by members of the Department of Anesthesiology has been awarded a Best Abstract distinction from the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. Also, Dr. Paul Pagel has been elected to membership in the Faculty of 1000 Medicine.
