Making a Difference through Giving

Giving to the Medical College of Wisconsin - DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY

The Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Surgery is dedicated to leadership and excellence in patient care, discovery, education and public and community health.

Philanthropy plays an important role in advancing the work of the Department of Surgery and the patients who receive its benefits. Over the past century, many generous philanthropic partners have helped our Department build a foundation of excellence in patient care, medical training and innovation. Now more than ever, philanthropic gifts are vital to the Department’s efforts to advance the practice of surgery.

Gifts to the Department of Surgery support research and patient care. This statement is true, but does not paint a full picture of how contributions are put to important use, often life-saving work.

Only stories can show the full reach to provide the most advanced, innovative treatments available. Here are such stories:

We would be honored if you join the many individuals who invest in our search for answers to human disease. Your gift to the Department of Surgery is truly an investment in a healthier future for you, your family and for generations.

AnchorDirecting Your Gift

There are many areas in which the Department of Surgery is making major contributions in the diagnosis and management of surgical diseases.

You may direct your gift to support all of the research, education and patient care activities of the Department of Surgery. Or you may restrict your contribution to support the work of a specific surgeon or a specific Division or Center within the Department.

AnchorMany Ways to Contribute

Gifts to the Department of Surgery can be made in many ways and for a variety of purposes. Some individuals help create endowments, which last in perpetuity and may be named in honor of the donor(s), or the surgeon to whom it is pledged. Others might provide immediate unrestricted support for research, training, or new equipment. Support may be made through outright gifts, multi-year pledges, memorials, endowments, life income gifts, bequests and charitable trusts.

AnchorWays of Giving

Endowed Support
Endowments, such as distinguished Professorships and Chairs, will allow the Department to grow and enrich the program in many ways. These gifts help to facilitate our faculty members to enhance existing programs and to create fellowships and lectureships. They also support promising new programs that might otherwise go unfunded. Many donors choose to establish both current and endowed funds that will benefit an area of personal or intellectual interest.

Additionally, endowed funds are powerful recruiting tools for attracting and retaining the most talented, sought after health scientists and clinical physicians. With such first-rate faculty come the brightest graduate students, the most accomplished colleagues and the public and private support that contribute to an intellectually challenging environment. Naming opportunities are often available with endowments.

Major Gifts
Major gifts, both outright and endowed, provide faculty with the funds needed to pursue their important investigations, purchase equipment, or establish a lecture – to name a few. Private philanthropy is essential – it is the catalyst for success as our physicians tirelessly investigate more effective treatments for our patients.

Unrestricted Gifts
Other gifts include unrestricted funds to support Department priorities such as faculty initiatives, equipment, medical research, training and educational efforts and community awareness and outreach.

Honor and Memorial Gifts
This can be done to recognize a loved one’s passing, to acknowledge a special occasion or perhaps to honor a significant person in your life. The Medical College will send an acknowledgement to both the donor and the family or individual being recognized. If you choose this giving option, please be sure to specify the designation of gift and payment instructions. For example:

“In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to support {optional designation} can be made to the Medical College of Wisconsin, Attn: Office of Development, 8701 Watertown Plank Road, Milwaukee, WI 53226 or online at http://www.mcw.edu/ia/waystogive/memorial.htm. Please indicate the name of designation in the comment section.”

AnchorMaking a Gift

Charitable gifts reward donors in many ways. There is a satisfaction of supporting an important cause, the excitement of seeing your gift lead to positive change, and in many cases tangible financial benefits to you and/or another beneficiary, through tax advantages and the retention of lifetime income from the donated asset.

Cash Gifts
If you would like to make a cash, check or credit card contribution, please print the Giving Form (pdf) and make your check payable to Medical College of Wisconsin; be sure to indicate how you would like your gift directed. If you would like your contribution in honor or memory of another, please provide name and contact address of appropriate party so we may inform them of your generosity. Please send your gift to the address listed below:

Online Gifts
If you would like to make a gift online using a credit card, please visit our secure site Make a Gift. Please indicate the name of designation in the comment section.

Charitable Planned Gifts (Tax-Wise Giving)
A gift can be structured to provide income for the donor, spouse, or other designated beneficiary while the gift also supports the Department of Surgery at a later date. This allows the donor to make a “deferred gift,” receive a tax deduction and receive income from the gift for life.

Testimonial Gifts – One of the most popular ways of giving is to leave cash, property or appreciated securities to a charitable institution, while at the same time supporting your family members, friends and others who have made a difference in your life.

Life Income Gifts – Giving a life income gift to the Department of Surgery helps donor meet three important goals; maintain a continuing source of income, provide an opportunity to receive tax benefits, and support the Department of Surgery.

Stock Transfer
To make a gift of transfer of stock, please contact Rick Worcester, Director of Planned Giving, at (414) 955-5824.
