Dr. Schmeling's Profile

Dr. Gregory J. Schmeling returned to the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1992 and is the Division Head of Orthopaedic Trauma and the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. His patient care includes injuries to the musculoskeletal system excluding hand or spine injury. He limits his practice to adults and adolescents but will see younger children with complex polytrauma.

Dr. Schmeling became board certified in 1993 and Fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in 1995. Dr. Schmeling began his academic career at the Medical College of Wisconsin at the academic rank of assistant professor in 1992. He advanced to the rank of associate professor in 1996 and professor in 2007. He was the Residency Program Director from 1995 to 2011 and he now is Vice Chair of Education; responsible for educational activities in Orthopaedics. His prior academic experience is an appointment as an instructor in the Orthopaedic Surgery & Rehabilitation Department at Loyola University Medical Center and at Hines VA Hospital, Maywood, Illinois; 1990 to 1992. In academic years 1993-1994, 1998-1999, and 2003-2004 he was named the Outstanding Clinical Instructor of the Year in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Schmeling is also a member of the American College of Surgeons, AO Alumni Association, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, American Orthopaedic Association, Mid-American Orthopaedic Association, Wisconsin Orthopaedic Society, Milwaukee Orthopaedic Society, and Milwaukee Academy of Medicine. He has held several leadership or committee positions in these organizations and was President of the Wisconsin Orthopaedic Society from 2001 – 2003. He is currently a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, and the Journal of Surgical Education. He is a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Orthopaedics and the Journal of the Orthopaedic Trauma.

Dr. Schmeling is active surgical staff and member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Froedtert Hospital and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI.

Dr. Schmeling's clinical interests include orthopaedic trauma and post-traumatic musculoskeletal infections. His current clinical and research interests include pelvic and acetabular fractures, management of the polytraumatized patient, pain management of orthopaedic injury, antibiotics in orthopaedics, and open fractures.
