Dr. Ronny Otero Comments on Gun Violence in Milwaukee
In recent weeks, Milwaukee has seen an uptick in gun violence around the city. Hospitals are seeing more patients coming in with gunshot related injuries, most of which are going to the area’s Level 1 trauma facility at Froedtert Hospital. Dr. Ronny Otero, emergency medicine physician, notes that it is organized chaos in the emergency room and every second counts when trying to save lives. He also comments that hospital staff are seeing multiple injuries within the same period. Dr. Otero says that it is possible for the hospital to see five or six people with gunshot injuries within a shift. All of that takes a toll on hospital staff, even when they have sufficient personnel. He concludes that it may get worse before it gets better.
